Beauty as Goodness

Leo Tolstoy said, “It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness.” These photos correspond to not-so-stellar memories, and yet they depict, in and of themselves, things to be admired. Shiny objects. This summer has felt heavy and in my search for levity, I have photographed a number of pretty things that do not provide more than a moment’s distraction from the constrictions of the day-to-day.

My grandmother’s master bedroom
Glitter from a night out that would come to haunt
The daybed in my grandfather’s lair
Purple mylar wrapping paper and a gin drink at Barclay Prime
